IMAGE DRIVEN WITH A FOCUS ON ILLUSTRATION TECHNIQUES,
DISTRIBUTED ACROSS BOOKS, PACKAGING AND PUBLICATION.
  • The main audience I wish to focus on for my FMP is children and design for education, looking into different ways of learning and how this changes through age / mental ability.
  • Image lead designer main area of focus illustration, may not accommodate to all briefs so will choose ones which are relevant to my practice.
  • Be a successful designer no matter what the budget need to deliver the correct message and best way possible to achieve this.
  • Build a relationship up with a client on a live brief be able to adjust designs to for fill what they asked for whilst maintaining the aesthetics I originally wanted.
  • Create a portfolio, which shows my ability to answer design set problems that have been resolved by image/illustration.
  • Research into small design studios where I wish to have creative freedom over my work with then the possibility of becoming a freelance illustrator in the future.
  • Work is for print yet may have to experiment with other forms of media such as motion for some elements of a child’s interactive learning process as technology is developing may be more effective methods of answering a brief.
  • Mixed media approach to design work working with methods such as collage screen printing letterpress ink drawings.
  • Designs use fun bright colours happy light hearted way of working yet work on serious problems.

Design Disciplines / Creative Development
Primary:
  • Image / Illustration
  • Experimental Hand drawn type
  • Packaging
  • Interactive packs
Secondary:
  • Stock
  • Layout
  • Book binding
  • Screenprint
  • Letter press
Distribution:
Printed material looking mainly at books Are willing to experiment with simple motion techniques or will at least mock up storyboards to show the effective resolution.
I am not interested in corporate branding or designing technical typefaces. I don’t particularly like using all digital methods. Im not a designing which organises type layout such as newspapers and don’t like typesetting.  Photography isn’t a strong application within the actual final designs of my work.

Practical Skills / Workshops – what, why and when?
Current Skills:
  • Product photography. Something, which is important in the presentation of work to show it at its best, is ok at the moment but a skill that needs refining in order to get the best from my portfolio and samples of work to show potential studios for internships.
  • Printing work professionally. Including packagaging files to stop loss of fonts un expected changes within the design etc Also experimenting with print processes to further the aesthitics and quality such as spot varnish foil blocking.
  • Quality of illustrations. Refine my style and experiment more with media in creating the imagery. And the applications for these.
  • Software. Is something that is always changing and your always improving on being able to be confident on the creative suite make feel more confident going to placements.
  • Screen printing. Understand how it works andfeel confident to do it alone yet need to be more experimental with the methods to get something new and unique.
  • Book binding. Have attended a workshop yet don’t feel confident with all possible methods of binding and how to get a professional feel to final products.
  • Time management. Getting much better at producing work under the pressure of a deadline  yet need the fast paced designing throughout whole module.
  • Type. Understanding best use for each typeface and personalities they have including size of type to use across different sized publications.
Skills want:
  • Finishing. Professional resolutions including areas such as stock choice, crafting skills, print process.
  • Image and type. Having a strong combination of both and how they work together in a design to get the best out of the resolution of the message.
  • Understanding the industry. Where I fit into the design world and what skills I need to refine in order to become something which is needed at the time when I graduate.
  • Client designer relationship. Build up contacts and areas where I can design industry standad work to get a name for myself.
  • Time management and organisation. Mainly the ability to plan ahead book in internships placements at printers etc and be so organised knowing what im doing on a daily basis. Write briefs out with as much information as possible to get the best out of the resolution without going off on a tangent.
  • Focus. Make a plan stick to it! Finish briefs on time by setting interim deadlines print all resolutions and plough though to leave room for any miss haps needs to re print etc.
  • Processes. Screen printing book binding letter press need time investing in learning new techniques to get full potential in what can be created manage this time effectively be on time and get out and create! Need to stop playing it safe on the mac!
  • Confidence. Something which I think I need to improve on in order to do studio visits not knowing how good/ bad im doing is worse than finding out and doing something about it!
